This month at Octagon we welcomed over 70 family members and friends to our annual Garden Party, where we hosted a strawberry afternoon tea. The weather was the perfect temperature making it a pleasure to sit outside, and residents enjoyed chatting to the many visitors while tucking into delicious scones, baked by House Manager, Karen. These were washed down by tea, coffee and a refreshing punch. Of course the big debate raged on – what is the correct way to prepare your scone?

In Cornwall, and at highly regarded afternoon tea establishment, the Ritz, the tradition is a layer of jam first, then clotted cream. However in Devon, they claim that the cream should be spread first, followed by a dollop of jam on top. Apparently the Queen prefers the Cornish method of jam first – so if it’s good enough for her – it’s good enough for us!

During the afternoon our raffle and tombola stall did a roaring trade, thanks to prizes such as whiskey, slippers, perfume and even a bird table. Many thanks to all who supported the event, which raised £460 to fund future outings for Octagon residents.
